Angola rises 14 positions in Human Development Index

New York, United States, 7 Oct – Angola was the Portuguese-speaking country to see the greatest rise in its position in the United Nations Human Development index, rising from 157th to 143rd place.
Although in 2008 only Cape Verde and Sao Tome and Principe were part of the medium development nations, in 2009 Angola joined this list by rising 14 places in the ranking.
Despite a drop of Cape Verde is in 121st place, in the middle of the ranking, whilst Sao Tome's fall leaves the archipelago ten places away from Cape Verde.
Brazil is in 75th place in the United Nations index and is considered to be a country with a high level of human development.
Mozambique and Guinea Bissau remain amongst the last placed in the world, in 172nd and 173rd places out of 182 countries and East Timor also has a poor classification in 162nd place and thus in the group of countries with a low level of human development.
Portugal, which is one of 38 countries with very high human development, fell one place this year to 34th, with indicators below the average of the European Union and the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).
